While the culture of Birmingham is decidedly Southern, it also has a fresh, dynamic quality about it. As the county seat of Jefferson County, Birmingham supports a population of almost 215,000. The city lies about 150 miles west of Atlanta and 200 miles south of Nashville, Tennessee. Local, regional and international transportation is provided by a complex network of roadways and interstates, plus the Birmingham International Airport and Amtrak passenger rail lines.

The city has long had close ties to the cultural arts, attracting day-trippers and tourists who want to experience the many art galleries, museums and entertainment venues. Alabama Ballet, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Ballet, Alabama Theatre, Alys Stephens Center and the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex are just a few of the organizations and venues that support the city's performing arts activities. These are complemented by a full calendar of cultural events and festivals. Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival and the Taste of 4th Avenue Jazz Festival are some of Birmingham's better known events.

The Birmingham lifestyle is further enhanced by a wealth of outdoor recreation with popular activities including golfing, fishing, mountain biking, hiking, picnicking and tennis. Real estate options in Birmingham consist of single-family homes, condominiums, townhouses, historic properties, and land parcels for custom real estate development.
